"A chart does not tell you what is going to happen. It tells you the point at which you were wrong, and what that mistake will cost. Knowing both before you buy is the whole discipline."Sunny Kang
Sunny Kang, Private Wealth Adviser at Boston Global Wealth, Sydney

A market technician running private wealth portfolios.

Sunny Kang is a Founding Partner of Boston Global Wealth and a Private Wealth Adviser working from the firm's Sydney office. He advises wholesale and sophisticated investors, SMSF trustees and family groups.

What separates his work from most advice practices is where the analysis starts. Sunny reads markets technically: trend, structure, volume and the levels at which a thesis breaks. Fundamentals tell you what a business is worth. Price tells you what the market is currently willing to pay, and where the balance between buyers and sellers is shifting. He uses both, and he lets price decide the timing.

That approach carries through to how portfolios are run. Every position has a defined level at which it is wrong, decided before it is opened. Size follows from the distance to that level rather than from how good the idea feels. It is a process designed to keep individual mistakes small and survivable.

He builds and tests his own scanners and strategy models across the ASX and international markets, which means the framework applied to client portfolios has been examined rather than assumed.

Important

No method of analysis, technical or fundamental, can predict market movements or prevent losses. Everything on this site is general advice only.

Four rules that decide every position.

Most portfolios are damaged not by picking the wrong asset but by holding it too long, in too large a size, with no plan for being wrong. This framework exists to stop that.

01

Trend and structure before conviction

A position is only opened where price structure supports it. That means an identifiable trend, a level that has held, and volume behaviour consistent with the move. A good story in a broken chart is a reason to wait, not a reason to buy.

02

The exit is set before the entry

Every position carries a predefined invalidation level, the price at which the reason for holding it no longer applies. It is written down before the trade is placed, so the decision to exit is made calmly rather than in a drawdown.

03

Size follows risk, not enthusiasm

Position size is calculated from the distance between entry and invalidation, against a fixed share of portfolio capital. A wider stop means a smaller position. This is where most damage is done, and where discipline pays for itself.

04

Repeatable, not discretionary

The same rules apply on the trade that feels obvious and the one that does not. Sunny builds and backtests his own scanners and strategy models so the framework is examined against history rather than adjusted by mood.

What this does and does not do

Technical analysis is a framework for managing risk. It is not a forecasting tool and it does not predict prices. A defined invalidation level limits the intended loss on a position but does not guarantee it, because markets can gap through a level, particularly on news or at the open. Markets can and do move against a disciplined process for extended periods. This approach is designed to make losses smaller and more survivable, not to avoid them. Past results, whether from live markets or from backtesting, are not an indicator of future performance.

A clear process, with no obligation until you decide to proceed.

Personal advice in Australia follows a defined path. Here is what that looks like in practice.

01

Discovery

An initial conversation about your position, your objectives, your timeframe and how much drawdown you can genuinely live with. No cost and no obligation. If Sunny is not the right fit, he will say so.

02

Portfolio review

A full look at what you hold now: asset allocation, concentration, liquidity, structures and superannuation, plus where the portfolio is currently exposed if the trend turns.

03

Statement of Advice

Written personal advice setting out what is recommended, why, what it costs and what the risks are, including the risk framework that will govern each position. Nothing is implemented until you agree.

04

Management and review

Positions are monitored against their predefined levels, and the portfolio is reviewed on an agreed schedule as your circumstances and market conditions change.

Beyond the listed market, for those who qualify.

Through the Boston Global Wealth platform, eligible clients can access private credit, real assets, infrastructure, pre-IPO equity and other alternatives. These are allocations that generally are not available through retail platforms or industry funds, and they are offered only to investors who qualify as wholesale or sophisticated.

Risk. Private market investments are illiquid and are usually held for multi-year terms with no ability to withdraw early. Valuations are infrequent and may not reflect what a position would realise on sale. Capital is at risk and total loss is possible. The risk framework described above applies to liquid, listed positions; it cannot be applied to an illiquid holding you are unable to exit. Availability is restricted to wholesale or sophisticated investors as defined under sections 708 and 761G of the Corporations Act.

How access works

Eligibility first, then fit

Access begins with eligibility. Wholesale or sophisticated status is established under the Corporations Act, usually by certificate from a qualified accountant, before any private market opportunity is discussed.

From there each allocation is sized against your existing portfolio, your liquidity needs and your capacity to bear a loss you cannot exit. Nothing is taken off the shelf, and a decision not to allocate is a common outcome.

Client assets are held and administered through established platform and custody providers. Boston Global Wealth does not hold client money.

Common questions before a first meeting.

What does a private wealth adviser do?

A private wealth adviser helps individuals, families and trustees set an investment strategy and manage it over time. Sunny Kang works with wholesale and sophisticated investors on portfolio strategy, market timing and risk control, private market access and broader financial planning, from Boston Global Wealth's Sydney office.

What is technical analysis and how does Sunny use it?

Technical analysis is the study of price and volume behaviour to understand trend, structure and the level at which a view is proven wrong. Sunny uses it to time entries and exits, to set a predefined invalidation level on every position, and to size positions against the distance to that level. It is a risk framework, not a crystal ball.

Does technical analysis predict where markets are going?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise should be treated carefully. No method of analysis can predict market movements or prevent losses. The value of this framework is that it defines in advance where a position is wrong and what that mistake will cost, so losses stay contained and decisions stay repeatable instead of emotional.

Is this day trading?

No. The framework is applied to a private wealth portfolio held over meaningful timeframes. Technical analysis governs when positions are opened, how large they are and when they are closed. It does not turn a long-term portfolio into a trading account.

Who does Sunny work with?

Wholesale and sophisticated investors, SMSF trustees, active investors and family groups, mostly in Sydney and across Australia.

Is the information on this website personal advice?

Before acting on it you should consider whether it is appropriate for you and seek personal advice. Personal advice is provided only after Sunny understands your circumstances, and is given in a written Statement of Advice.
